Free and Easy Testing - The Gateway to Treatment
With 33 million people living HIV/AIDS and only 3 million on treatment we have a global crisis that we cannot ignore. We have successfully fought for universal access to treatment and made it a potential reality, however, it is not possible until we take a step back and create universal access to free and easy Rapid HIV testing.
With the vast majority of positive people in the world unaware of their status, we must unite to create innovative ways to quickly scale-up access to quality testing and treatment referral. The traditional Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) model is ineffective to provide the volume of tests required to reach one billion people globally per year.
New testing models need to be embraced by NGOs and government health systems
including:
- Streamlined Group Pre-test Counseling
- Routine and Provider-initiated Testing
- RAPID, One-Minute Testing with same day results
- Community-based, on-site testing
- Treatment referrals
It's possible—we saw it happen across the world for World AIDS Day 2008 and 2009. We can no longer wait for people to take themselves to inaccessible VCT centers. We have to find ways to bring testing to the people – where they are, where they work and where they live. Confidentiality maintained, quality testing modalities utilized, safer sex and prevention information provided and support and treatment referrals immediately offered to positive clients post disclosure. However, we must scale-up testing and knock down the barriers that are allowing preventable virus transmissions and deaths.
WHO Progress Report 2008:
“With the availability of treatment, however, the need to scale-up
HIV testing and counseling is increasingly recognized both as a gateway
to treatment and prevention and as a way to “normalize” and
destigmatize HIV”.
The Testing Millions World AIDS Day 2009 campaign calls for current testing
programs around the world to step up your efforts, break the
mold and do things differently. Adapt pre-test counseling sessions
to group sessions. Set higher daily/weekly/ monthly testing
goals. Seek out new rapid test kit modalities. Break out of
the clinic and put up a tent in community to provide fast and
easy testing.
Utilize the Testing Model Flow Chart and Training Tools on this website to help. There is no one “right way” – but we do know that we have to step up the pace. We have to think smarter, act faster and unite in a global effort to scale-up free, safe and easy HIV testing.
